I just watched the funeral of Former President Corazon Aquino and also followed the events from her death last saturday, to the public viewing of her remains both in La Salle Greenhills and in the Manila Cathedral, to the necrological services yesterday, and finally to her burial at Manila Memorial Park.
A common element here is the blatant outpouring of sorrow not only by her family and friends, but also by millions of Filipinos. The funeral motorcade from the Cathedral to the Memorial Park lasted 8 hours because of the sheer volume of people who want to see her one last time. People were throwing confetti, shouting her name and made the Laban sign with their hands; a testament to how much Cory has inspired the entire nation.
I cannot blame them. If it wasn't for Cory, we would still be under control by a totalitarian tyrant. Cory was the one who gave us our freedom back. The death of her husband Ninoy enlightened her to take up the challenge and stand in his place. She was able to unify the people and became the nation's leader following the successful non-violent movement now know as EDSA 1. As a result, she has become the mother of democracy of our country. She showed the world that we do not need force to get what we desire, but rather through peaceful means and through prayer.
Cory will be remembered as one of the greatest presidents of all time, perhaps even exceeding Ramon Magsaysay, because of her simplicity, humility, motherly love for her family and her country, and most importantly, her deep steadfast faith in the lord God. I understand why her loss is a tragedy to the Filipino people. She was an inspiration to us all.
And now that she is finally laid to rest, we say farewell to one of the greatest icons in Philippine history. History will never forget the deeds that she had done. She may be gone, but she will never be forgotten, for she taught us one valuable lesson; if we unite as one country, we can make things happen.
Paalam, Tita Cory. Maraming Salamat po.
